Two of Gresley’s magnificent A4 Pacifics, No. 4468 ‘Mallard’ heading an express for Kings Cross and 4498 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ meet at Grantham during the spring of 1938. Later, in the same year on July 3rd ‘Mallard was to break the World speed record for steam traction at 126mph just south of this point.
