‘On the 9th May 1904 the Great Western Railway ‘City’ class 4-4-0 No.3440 ‘City Of Truro’ was recorded as reaching 102.4 mph whilst descending Wellington bank in Somerset in charge of an ‘Ocean Mails’ special from Millbay Docks, Plymouth to Bristol thereby becoming the first steam locomotive to travel at more than 100 mph. Scholars have debated the veracity of this claim ever since! This is the artist’s impression of the magical moment. No.3440 was built at Swindon in 1903 and is now preserved as part of the National Collection.’
